Arthritis
Arthritis is a disease causing painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints and can affect the entire body.
Symptoms:
Aching or generalized pain in one joint or an entire area of your foot, ankle, knee and hip.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics can lead to long-term changes in biomechanics that may slow or prevent the progression of arthritis. Furthermore they can relieve pain and pressure on sensitive areas of the feet.
Bunions / Hallux valgus
Bunions (also called hallux valgus) are visible bumps on the side of the foot in the area of the large toe joint. Mostly caused by the pressure of tight or narrow shoes on the big toe joint.
Symptoms:
Difficulty moving the big toe and pain in the big toe when walking or moving it.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a forefoot pad to reduce pressure and a stiffening element to reduce the movement of the big toe.
Claw toe / Hammer toe
Claw toes or hammer toes are bent at the middle or at the end joints and are digging down into the soles of your shoes. Without treatment it can become a permanent deformity and may also be a sign of other conditions, including diabetes or arthritis.
Symptoms:
Painful calluses and corns. It´s often associated with a high arched (cavus) foot.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a toe crest, arch support and further adjustments to reduce the tension of tendons.
Diabetic neuropathy
People with diabetes are more prone to fluctuations in blood sugar. Diabetic neuropathy is not one condition, but a group of conditions that can damage the nerves, especially those in the feet.
Symptoms:
A lack of sensation can lead to an increased risk of cuts, sores, and blisters.
Treatment:
Besides maintaining a good health and blood sugar control, custom-made orhotics can help to avoid pressure on the diabetic foot in order to prevent circulatory disturbances.
Fallen arch / Splay foot (Pes Valgus)
Fallen arch or Splay feet are the most common foot deformity. Sinking of the transverse foot arch leads to foot complaints by shifted pressure load and it can also cause knee- or even back problems.
Symptoms:
Shifted pressure load can cause pain in the big toe joint and pain in the outer area of the knee.
Treatment:
Shoe inserts with an suitable arch support.
Flat foot (Pes Planus / PTTD)
The arches on the inside of your feet are flattened, allowing the entire soles of your feet to touch the floor when you stand up. Flatfeet can occur when the arches don't develop during childhood, after an injury or contribute to problems in your ankles and knees.
Symptoms:
Pain in the heel or arch area and swelling along the inside of the ankle.
Treatment:
Shoe inserts with a suitable arch support.
Foot fatigue
Foot fatigue is a common condition that occurs after you stand or walk for long periods of time. especially common in a workplace environment where you are on your feet all day as well as in runners.
Symptoms:
The foot muscles become overly tired and cramp, causing the sufferer to experience pain, swelling and crumping.
Treatment:
Mainly treatable with rest and relaxation. Inserts with an suitable arch support and cushioning can also be helpful in order to reduce painful pressure points by absorbing the impact.
Gonathrosis
Knee gonathrosis (also called osteoarthritis) is the progressive wear of the knee joint.
This may be caused by a wrong varus or valgus foot position which has a negative effect on the leg and knee axis (knock knees or bandy legs).
Symptoms:
Pain on the outside or the inside of the knee joint and limited ability to move.
Treatment:
Treatment possibilities depend on the disease stage. However custom-made orthotics with a suitable varus or valgus shape can be helpful for pain relief.
Hallux rigidus
Hallux rigidus is a disorder of the joint located at the base of the big toe which causes pain and stiffness in the joint and the big toe and is a form of degenerative arthritis.
Symptoms:
Pain, stiffness, swelling and inflammation around the joint.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a forefoot pad and a stiffening element to reduce the movement and pain of joint and the big toe.
Heel spur
A heel spur is an outgrowth of calcium causing a bony protrusion between the heel bone and the arch of the foot. Often caused by poorly fitted or badly worn shoes, lack of appropriate arch support, an excess weight and running or jogging on hard surfaces.
Symptoms:
A sharp intermittent or chronic pain in the heal and rear arch area during walking or standing.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a special rearfoot adjustment that reduces painful pressure points by absorbing the impact.
Hollow foot (Pes Cavus)
Hollow foot is a condition in which the foot has a very high arch. Because of this high arch, an excessive amount of weight is placed on the ball and heel of the foot when walking or standing.
Symptoms:
Hammertoes or claw toes can occure as well as pain and inflammation of the forefoot and rearfoot area and of the shin bone.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with stretch elements that have the purpose to low the arch and the muscular tension of the shin bone.
Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is a condition in which the ball of your foot becomes painful and inflamed. People taking part in high-impact sports involving running or jumping belong to the risk group.
Symptoms:
Sharp, aching or burning pain in the ball of your foot (the area just behind your toes)
Treatment:
Shoe inserts with an suitable arch support and with a shock-absorbing forefoot cushion.
Morton´s neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a growth of nerve tissue that develops in the ball of the foot between your metatarsal bones. It can be caused by foot or gait abnormality, which can put pressure on a nerve in your foot. Most commonly occurs in middle-aged people, especially middle-aged women.
Symptoms:
Pain in the ball of the foot usually between the third and fourth toes.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a special forefoot pad that spreads apart the metatarsal heads and reliefs pain in the affected are.
Pelvis twist
Hip and pelvic problems can be caused by its twisting. The causes of this can be foot malposition or leg a length difference.
Symptoms:
Tight muscles in the pelvic and thigh areas. Knee and low back back pain.
Treatment:
Researchers showed improvement in short-term outcomes and pain scores if suitable custom-made foot orthoses were used.
Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. It can be caused by flat feet or a very high arch, tight Achilles tendons, overweight and unusual walk or foot position.
Symptoms:
Pain at the bottom of your foot reaching from your heel to your toes.
Treatment:
Custom-made orthotics with a suitable longitudinal arch support and further adjustments to reduce the tension of tendons.
